Making the move to a new home is a very exciting time. It also, undoubtedly comes with stress. This is felt by all members of the family!
Here are some tips that make the transition smooth and safe for our furry friends:
1. INTRODUCE A CRATE
Whether you're moving with a dog or a cat, its important to gradually introduce a well-ventilated, sturdy crate long before the moving date.
Leave it out a few weeks ahead of time to allow your pet to crawl in and explore. Leaving treats inside can help.
2. STAY SAFE IN THE CAR
Pets should never be left to roam free in a vehicle. This is dangerous for both the driver and the pet. Cats are especially curious and me end up on the dashboard or under the driver's feet. Have your pet travel in it's crate.
3. PREVENT MOTION SICKNESS
Just like humans, felines and canines can become motion sick or become dehydrated during car rides. If your trip is short, offering food and/or water isn't necessary. Most pets won't want to eat in a moving vehicle. If your cat has a sensitive stomach it's probably best to avoid feeding him within a few hours before leaving. Dogs on the other hand need frequent water and/or snack breaks.
4. KEEP ANY MEDICATIONS/SPECIAL FOOD ON HAND
There's no need to have all your pet's essentials on hand during the move. If, however, they are on medications or special food it is advised to have approximately a weeks worth handy just in case.
5. TAKE BREAKS
If the trip to the new house is a long one, make sure to take breaks and allow your dogs to stretch their lets and go to the bathroom. Cats, however, should be equipped with a litter box in their crate if you are going to be in the car for a long period of time.
6. PROVIDE A QUIET SPACE
While movers are unloading and you are unpacking, pets should not be left amongst the chaos. Seclude it in a safe and quiet place like the bathroom or den. Hang a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door to keep people out.
